Bear Sculpture

My friend and artist, Aaron Poovey, is foremost a stone sculptor, but has created many unique sculptures from bronze, stainless and mild steel as well. At a recent visit to his studio, I spotted this marble bear he had just completed. Thinking it would be complimentary in some way to my Bear Gate project, I asked Aaron if I could take it home and photograph it. Of course, he was happy to accomodate. The marble bear sculpture is approximately 6" L x 4" W x 2-1/2" H and has beautiful rust, grey and black markings. It would make a wonderful paper weight for your desk! Price: $150.
Aaron begins by selecting raw stone material from the quarry and transporting it to his studio. He then looks for a "shape" in the stone and begins to chisel-away until the subject begins to emerge from the stone. After hours of refinement with chisels and grinders, he begins the tedious polishing process with various grades of sanding disks. Aaron has created numerous stone sculptures, ranging in size from table-top to large garden sculptures. He has also created some interesting bronze figurines, as well as metal sculptures incorporating fused glass. I will be building an image gallery for Aaron in the near future.
